Hereford Pomona PlateGilbert Lee will be sharing sight of his collection of cider and perry related books.  Gilbert says:

Back in the late 1980s I visited the Museum of Cider at Hereford. Of all the things there, the one that really caught my attention was The Herefordshire Pomona. There was a copy in a glass-topped case, open at one page. A beautiful coloured plate of cider apples. I so wanted to see more. Apparently there was a copy that you could look at in Hereford Library.

For some reason, I never did see that copy, but the fascination with this beautiful, historical and very rare book never left me.

Fast forward to the 2010s. I had been making cider for 20 years, always with an interest in the old varieties.

The internet had let me see that copies of the Herefordshire Pomona occasionally got offered for sale and I kept a folder of clippings of all I could find.

One day I came across a copy, with a few plates missing, at a price in the £100s rather than £1000s. I clicked ‘Buy’. There’s a story to that purchase, but I did end up getting that beautiful book.

That was the beginning of my downfall. I now have a collection of old and modern books on cider and cidermaking, ranging from Liz Copas’s recent study of Dorset orchards, to John Evelyn’s ‘Pomona’ to very technical Long Ashton publications.

I love to share my joy in these books, and can think of no better place to do so.

Please come and say hi and enjoy them with me.
